Why Outdoor Learning Matters for Children

In a world that often asks children to sit still, look at screens, and move quickly from one thing to the next, there is deep value in spaces that invite something different, like movement, imagination and time in nature.

Tucked into the landscape of Lumby, and nestled between forest, creek and farm, The Bridge Land for Learning is more than a school campus; it is a shared space for connection, movement and belonging. This rich and varied landscape offers a truly magical place for children to spend their days, with forested trails that invite both students and the wider community to step into nature and experience its quiet, steady rhythm.

These trails are woven into the daily life of the students, who move through them as part of their learning by walking, observing, exploring and caring for the land. Outside of program hours—Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m.—the trail system is open to the extended community, offering a welcoming space for families, neighbours and visitors to reconnect with the natural world. A visit offers the chance to wander the forested trails and follow the beautiful boardwalk that winds alongside Duteau Creek, where the sound of moving water and the surrounding landscape reflect the rhythm and calm that shape daily life on the campus.

Learning beyond the classroom

Outdoor learning is not an occasional activity; it is an integral part of the school’s educational approach. Whether in the Early Years Centre or the grade school, children regularly move between indoor and outdoor spaces, building physical coordination, resilience and a deep relationship with their environment. Time spent on the land supports:

• Physical health and coordination
• Sensory integration and emotional regulation
• Curiosity, observation and ecological awareness

In a time when many children experience increasing screen time and structured schedules, access to unhurried, nature-based experiences is more important than ever.
